The city looks different from behind. Service doors, fire escapes, dumpsters, and just enough darkness to make bad decisions seem reasonable. The Back Way is where people go when the front entrance asks too many questions.
The lights stay on late in this section of town. Bars, pool halls, theaters and nightclubs crowd the streets, offering music, drinks, games and the occasional bad decision. Come for the entertainment. Stay because somebody misplaced the exit.
Everybody has to eat. Diners, coffee shops, lunch counters and restaurants keep the city fed, caffeinated and occasionally out of trouble. The food is usually safe. The company is another matter.
Some people check in. Others lie low. Motels, hotels and rooming houses offer a bed, a locked door and the comforting illusion that nobody knows where you are. Around here, somebody usually does.
Everybody has business Downtown. Offices fill the upper floors while taxis, buses and people-with-somewhere-to-be keep the streets moving below. Around here, everybody seems to have an appointment. Not everybody makes it.
It's the kind of place where nothing bad should happen. Shaded paths wind past the pond, gazebo and old trees before disappearing into the woods. Stay on the path. Or don't. The park has never been particularly judgmental.
Everybody needs someplace to dock. Sailboats, working boats and people with reasons not to be noticed come and go with the tide. The water is usually calm. The people are another matter.
