The Briefcase

A battered black briefcase sits unattended on a park bench near a gazebo on a sunny day.

You noticed the briefcase the first time you passed the bench.

Twenty minutes later, it was still there.

Now you’re passing the bench for the third time.

The briefcase hasn’t moved.

There’s nobody around.

You stop.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

You sit down and lift the latches.

Inside are three neatly wrapped bundles of cash.

Nothing else.

You reach for one.

A voice behind you says:

“I wouldn’t.”

You decide it isn't your problem and keep walking.

At the end of the path, you glance back.

The bench is empty.

The briefcase is gone.

Your phone rings.

You answer.

“Smart move.”
