The Drop
You’re having a late-night coffee at the counter.
The diner is nearly empty.
A man walks in and takes the stool beside you.
You glance at all the empty seats.
He drinks his coffee without saying a word.
A few minutes later, he gets up and leaves.
As you reach down to pick up something you dropped, you notice a small metal compartment attached beneath his stool.
None of the other stools have one.
You look inside.
There’s a bundle of cash.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
You leave the money where you found it.
A few minutes later, another man walks into the diner.
He takes the stool beside you.
He orders coffee.
You finish yours and leave.
The next morning, you turn on the news.
A photograph appears on the screen.
It’s the waitress from the diner.
She was found dead shortly after midnight.
You look around.
No one seems to be paying attention.
You take the cash and slip it into your pocket.
You finish your coffee and leave.
Halfway down the block, you hear footsteps behind you.
You walk faster.
So do they.
You turn the corner.
The footsteps follow.
