How do you write noir?
People ask what makes a good noir story. The problem with that question is that there isn't a single answer.
It doesn't always begin with a crime. Sometimes it begins with desire. A weakness.
A compromise someone believes they can manage… until they can't.
Then comes the choice. Usually, the easy way out.
Everything is fine. Everyone gets what they want. Until unexpected consequences arrive.
Cue the regrets. The secrets. The lies people tell to get through the day.
Facades fall away. Characters are exposed in all their raw humanity. That's where noir lives, at least for me. Not in the crime but in the choices… and the price people pay for them.
The rest is up to the reader.
