The Subway
You’re running late.
Your boss made it clear you cannot miss tonight’s event.
You race down the subway stairs and reach the platform just as the train is about to leave.
You slip through the doors before they close.
You find a seat and catch your breath.
A few minutes later, you notice the passengers around you.
They’re looking at their phones.
But something has changed.
One passenger stares at his screen, then quickly looks around the car.
Another quietly shows her phone to the person beside her.
A few people exchange glances.
The car grows quiet.
At the next station, the doors open.
People begin getting off.
More than you’d expect.
One of the passengers passes you on his way out.
Without stopping, he says under his breath:
“I think you better get off here.”
The doors are about to close.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
You step onto the platform.
“Excuse me—is something going on?”
Nobody stops. Everyone is quickly running toward the stairs.
You pull out your phone.
There’s a message from your boss.
DON’T GET ON THE TRAIN. THERE’S A KILLER LOOSE IN THE SUBWAY.
You look up.
At the far end of the platform, a man is standing alone.
He looks straight at you.
The doors close.
You check the time.
You’re already late.
Whatever that was about, you’re not listening to some crazy person.
The train starts moving.
The car is almost empty now.
A man across from you puts his phone away.
He gets up and walks toward you.
Of all the empty seats, he takes the one beside you.
For a moment, he says nothing.
Then he leans closer.
“We’re getting off together at the next stop.”
Something hard presses against your side.
He smiles.
You’re going to be late after all.
