DISPATCH FROM THE CITY
Something's always happening in Noir City. Most people keep walking. Investigators notice. Make your choice. See what happens.
The Bag
You’re walking along Dead Guy Pier when something below the decking catches your eye.
You stop and look over the edge.
A waterproof bag is secured to one of the pilings beneath the pier.
You crouch down and reach for it.
It takes some effort, but you manage to pull it up.
You look around.
No one seems to be paying any attention to you.
You open the bag.
Inside is a small pouch.
You loosen the drawstring and look inside.
Diamonds.
You stare at them for a moment, then pour a few into your hand.
You have no idea whether they’re real.
But if they are, you could be holding a fortune.
You look around again.
Still no one.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
You slip the pouch into your pocket and drop the empty bag back over the side.
As you walk away, a small boat pulls alongside the pier.
The man at the wheel calls out to you. He says he injured his shoulder and needs help navigating his boat to the other side of the pier.
“It’ll only take a minute.”
You look toward the end of the pier.
You’re feeling particularly lucky tonight. Maybe this is your chance to return the world a favor.
You can certainly spare a few minutes.
He pulls up close enough that you climb aboard.
The boat pulls away.
A few minutes later, you realize you’re heading away from the pier.
“I thought you said we were going to the other side of the pier.”
“I did.”
The man’s injured shoulder now seems to be working just fine.
“Where are we going?”
He looks at you.
“You found something that belongs to me.”
You nervously reach into your pocket.
“I’ll give them back.”
He smiles.
“I’m not worried about the diamonds.”
The thought of walking away with the diamonds suddenly makes you nervous.
What if whoever put them here comes back?
You quickly put the diamonds back into the waterproof bag and secure it.
You’re about to leave when another thought stops you. What if they’re already on their way back?
You decide it’s safer to stay out of sight for a few minutes and make sure the coast is clear.
You move away from the edge and find a place to hide.
Within minutes, a small motorboat approaches the pier. A man pulls alongside and reaches beneath the decking.
He finds the bag.
As he opens it, another man appears. Before the man in the boat can react, he’s struck from behind and falls over the side.
The other man grabs the bag and disappears.
You stare at the water.
The man doesn’t come back up.
You don’t move. You’re afraid to.
After a few moments, everything is quiet again.
Taking your chances, you slowly begin to come out of hiding when a voice behind you says:
“Let’s walk.”
